Bangladesh High Commission Celebrates 37th Independence & National Day

Bangladesh High Commission Canberra arranged a reception on the eve of the 37th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh at the Australian High Court Building, at Canberra on the 26th of March. There were many distinguished guests including Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, high officials of the Government of Australia including from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, politicians, military officers, members of diplomatic corps, media personnel, cultural activists, social activists and members of the Bangladesh expatriate community. High Commissioner, H.E Humayan Kabir, and Mrs. Kabir along with high commission staff welcomed all the guests. During the evening, a toast was offered while both the Bangladeshi and Australian national anthems played. A short presentation was shown on Bangladesh and its landmarks and features. Photos...



Basbhumi.com celebrated its biennial program at Matraville School Auditorium on the 25th March, 2007 in front of full house crowds. The program started with a minutes silence for martyrs of 1971, the program being dedicated to them. Kaiser Ahmed, assistant editor of Basbhumi, was the host of the program. Akidul Islam, editor of Basbhumi, gave a speech on basbhumi and honoured regular writers and columnists with flowers and muktijudho posters. The whole program was presented with a mix of speeches, recitations, dances and singing. Bangladeshi community leaders, writers, social activists and media representatives gave their opinion on Basbhumi. The organisers were very happy with the successful event. Tragic Death of a BUET Graduate. MD Khairul Hasan Patwary (MUKUL) from Tasmania died of fatal road accident last Saturday night, Innalilla.........He was a young Civil engineer who graduated from BUET in 2001. He did his M. Engg degree from UTS (Sydney) and currently working as a Structural Engineer in Launceston, Tasmania. It appear that he may fell asleep (Micro sleep) while driving late in the night and hit a tree. More sadly, 2 months back he went back to Bangladesh and got married. Please do pray for the departed soul. -Nawshad

AusBangla Radio Sydney is a much admired & well known radio station in Sydney among the Bengali community.There are a huge number of listeners for this Radio station. The well known announcer and director of Ausbangla Radio, Lutfor Rahman Shaon, is also the editor of Shadesh Barta and Ausbangla.com During my visit to the studio, Mr. Shaon told me that for the convenience of the listeners, the time of the program is moving from Saturday 1:00-2:00PM to Sunday 08:00-10:00PM, effective from the 1st of April. Akku Chowdhury Honoured in Sydney

On the 4th of March, 2007, a get-together was held in honour of the freedom fighter, Mr. Akku Chowdhury by Protity at Sirajus Salekin’s residence. Mr. Chowdhury was a freedom fighter under the 9th sector and also the founder of the Bangladesh Muktijuddho Jadughor. This was an open discussion about the past, present and future of our freedom fight and independence. The audience seriously and actively took part in the discussion and asked many questions.Mr.Chowdhury gave thoughtful and analytical answers to many questions, which were not known to many of us. A few songs were sung in the program. Protity collect some money from the audience and donated to the Muktijuddo Jadughor, as they usually do for many causes for Bangladesh and its people. The BUET-87 Alumni met at Nurragingy Reserve on the 24th of February 2007. It was an excellent reunion. This is the 2nd time the BUET-87 alumni were able to meet at Sydney. It’s terrific that almost everyone was able to attend the gathering. The alumni along with their families and kids enjoyed a good time together, filled with fun. Everyone feels proud to be a part of a family friendship. The Alumni has agreed to meet quarterly and maintain their friendship for years to come. Ekushe Academy Australia, Boi Mela-2007

Ekushe Academy Australia organised an Ekushe-book fair on the 24th of February at Ashfield Park as they do every year. Ekushe February is a very special occasion for the Bangladeshi community. The 21st of February has been recognised as International Mother Language Day so this day is now well known all over the world. There were many distinguished guests present at the mela including the chief guest, Bangladesh High Commissioner H.E. M. Humyan Kabir. Though there was some rain during the day, the program continued as planned. This year, there were huge crowds and the bookstalls were very busy. During the day there were many programs and activities, such as speeches, performances from musical groups, dances, and poetry recitations.
