Self Defence and Martial Arts as a Hobby
Rafid Morshedi (16) of Holsworthy has been learning Martial Arts – self- defence and karate for several years in a local Karate school 'Go WithThe Flow Self Defence School'. It is a hobby and a way of exercising/relaxing in between his school studies. He is currently a brown belt holder, and was awarded the best student trophy over the last 2 years.
He is the current NSW Open Champion in his age group and self-defence category.
On invitation, Rafid recently participated in the World Martial Arts Championships – US Open Martial Arts Tournament at Orlando, Florida. He competed in group events, and in individual category with under 18 (year) black belt holders from USA, Canada, Germany, Jamaica, Korea, Japan etc. He secured a fourth place trophy in his individual category. Group category trophies included first, second, and third places.
The competition was held in Disney World, Orlando, Florida, USA between 1-2 July. Rafid is sporty and is also an accredited swimming coach at the Holsworthy Aquatic Centre. He is in year 11 at Sydney Technical Boys High School, Bexley. Rafid is in squad swimming, and plays for school hockey and cricket teams. He also loves camping, bush walking and participates in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program, run by his school. Rafid played club hockey and cricket (Moorebank), and currently is school hockey team captain. He also plays water polo for his school team.
