National Mourning day observed in Canberra
National Mourning Day was observed on 15 August 2008 at the Australian capital city of Canberra. Bangladesh High Commission organized a programme to observe the day with due solemnity. The programme began in the morning with the hoisting of Bangladesh national falg at half-mast by the Acting High Commissioner. A one-minute silence was observed to mark the saddest day in the history of Bangladesh. A special prayer was offered for the salvation of the departed souls of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the members of his family who were brutally killed by miscreants on 15 August in 1975. These were followed by an open discussion meeting on the significance of National Mourning Day at the conference hall of the High Commission. High Commission officials and a good number of Bangladesh community members participated in the programme. The speakers paid their great tribute to Bangabandhu and praised the present Caretaker Government for re-introducing the observance of National Mourning day. They spoke about the importance of working unitedly from the basic premise - Bangladesh, earned through the historic war of liberation, to realize the dream of Bangabandhu - a happy and prosperous Bangladesh, free from exploitation. A portrait of Bangabandhu, gralanded with white flowers, was on display at the conference hall, which was perfectly befitting with the mood of the day. The community members, present on the occasion, highly appreciated the well thought-out programme organized by the High Commission.
