The Bangladesh Gold cup is being played for last 13 years in succession hosted by BANSW. This year BANSW decided to play in Auburn and have received tremendous support from the local community and Auburn Council. Eight teams competed against each other in round robin league for the last nine weeks in Progress Park, Auburn. Beside the Bangladesh community locals joined in to watch these preliminary rounds.

The final game was played on Sunday (05 April 2009) at Auburn Park, the game started with much enthusiasm and a sizeable crowd of friends and supporter between BD Green Boys and Western All Star. Both teams are known for their batting prowess and aggressive fielding, so the crowd was no wonder waited for the excitement.

There was no shortage of excitement, Western All Star elected to bat first on a slow pitch due to the heavy rains for most days of last week. They went to bat with all confidence and have hit hard to keep the opponent running around the field to collect the ball, until the bowlers of BD Green started to find their mark with some accurate length and line. Then came the devastating balling from BD Green and soon Western All Star lost 5 of their top order batsmen within 17 over’s with 85 on the score board. The middle order batsman and tailenders took the responsibility to take the score to 113 runs in the allocated 35 over’s.

BD Green went on the attack with the word go they hammered the fast bowlers’ of Western All Star, the Captain of Western All Star decided to change the space and got a good result by slowing down the run rate and suddenly they found the momentum and decided to hit back with some tricky balling and aggressive fielding. The BD Green was reduced to 99 with the loss of 7 wickets with 14 balls remaining and 15 runs needed to win. From this moment the game became a cliff hanger as All Stars took 2 wickets with three balls as BD Green could only added 2 runs to their total. It was left to the tailenders of BD Green to turn the game around. A brilliant batting by Masud who did hit a sixer and four saved the day until BD Green with 3 balls to spare and 5 runs to win. BD Green did score the winning run with one ball to play.
